Me in Merkle- Karthik Mohan

Me in Merkle is a series of interviews that showcase the incredible individuals who make Merkle a unique and diverse place to work. This week we chatted to Karthik Mohan, senior analytical consultant at Merkle based in the Edinburgh office.

1. Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

I grew up in the coastal state of Kerala, India and now live in Edinburgh, UK.

2. What drew you to your current career?

Interest in maths and solving problems.

3. Why Merkle?

There was a presentation by folks from Aquila (which later became the advanced analytics team within Merkle), which showcased the brilliant data science work done by the team as well as initiatives such as the partnership with Stop The Traffik, which really resonated with me. I got a glimpse of the company culture as well, which was great.

4. Tell us a bit more about your day-to-day.

A mixture of coding, presentations and meetings, in varying proportions across days.

5. What do you enjoy most about Advanced Analytics? And what do you think future developments will be?

I really enjoy the flexibility on offer – in terms of tools or techniques to use, methodologies to follow etc. There’s a variety of problems to tackle as well, which keeps you on your toes.

6. What would your advice be to somebody considering a career in Analytics?

I read somewhere – “Be comfortable with being uncomfortable”, which really applies to a fast-evolving field as data science and analytics. There are always new languages, libraries, techniques and tools to learn and keep up with. It is very likely that in a few months you will not be working with something that you are comfortable with now.

7. What is your greatest accomplishment?

I think completing my MSc with a distinction ranks pretty high up there for me, it was a lot of work to finish my dissertation on time!

8. Tell us a bit about your experience so far with Merkle.

It’s been a lot of fun, meeting some super-smart, super-pleasant, super-fun people; working on exciting and challenging projects that I have learnt a lot from. It’s been a continuous learning experience for the most part.

9. What inspires you about Merkle’s workplace culture?

The respect and compassion everyone has for their colleagues.

10. What was your dream job growing up?

I wanted to be an astronaut.

11. Rapid fire:

a. How do you like your eggs?

Scrambled, sweet

b. What are you currently watching on Netflix/Prime?

I recently started watching an anime – Samurai Champloo

c. What’s your guilty pleasure?

I watch Riverdale on Netflix, it is so bad that it is good

d. What is your dream holiday destination?

I’ve always wanted to go to the Aurora Borealis Observatory in Senja, Norway

e. Best advice or mantra you live by?

I try to live by the quote “Every day you wake up, you have one job and that’s to get better” by former NBA MVP Derrick Rose, I don’t always succeed though.
